Dear Fellow Teacher and/or Parent,

We are pleased to introduce
Bright Beginnings: Lessons for Very Early Childhood,
a curriculum for children from birth to 2 years old.

Finally, the value of these tiny people is being acknowledged. Not so long ago, many adults believed the preposterous idea that infants could not even feel pain. Now we know that very young children are not blank slates but are actively learning from day one. Newborns need about five minutes to learn to command a pacifier-controlled computer. They know when something doesn’t make sense, and they are able to remember sequences of events weeks and even years after experiencing them. They are growing physically, mentally and spiritually.

Bright Beginnings lessons start by strengthening teachers and parents as "spiritual guides" for the very young. The focus is on the spiritual qualities found in every Bible story with an eye to becoming the visual - the example for the children. The teacher’s guide throughout each lesson helps adults bring Bible truths to life as they interact with children. "If they learn to trust us, it will be easier for them to trust God. If we are patient and self-controlled, they will learn it automatically. If we model humility and mercy, Jesus comes to life in their lives."

The Bright Beginnings lessons are organized into two books called Learning Strings. The activities and lessons in each string follow a logical order so we can string them together in our minds. One idea leads to the next so that concepts that may be "over the children’s heads" stay right with them, much like a helium balloon on a string. Because words and activities are repeated and connected to everyday objects, they are bound together with everyday life. When spiritual qualities are woven tightly together like the individual strings of a rope, they become strong enough to keep us from falling as we climb toward the ultimate goal - love God and love others as ourselves.

Each Learning String of thirteen lessons is a year’s worth of material. There is no need to plan for a new lesson each week. In fact, infants thrive on materials repeated three, four, or even more times. And the lessons can be used in any order.

Learning String 1: God’s Gifts, encourages infants and toddlers to be thankful for every part of God’s creation and for his son, Jesus. The lessons are:

Thank You for Plants Thank You for Play
Thank You for Animals Thank You for the Earth
Thank You for Food Thank You for the Universe
Thank You for Family and Friends Thank You for Life
Thank You for Work Thank You for the Bible
Thank You for Rest Thank You for Jesus
Thank You for my Body

Learning String 2: Your Belongings, is designed to help infants and toddlers value the gifts of physical and spiritual life. The lessons are:

Please and Thank You Your Sensitive Skin
Your Unique Name Your Own Body
Your Rejoicing Voice Your Magnificent Mind
Your Nice Nose Your Powerful Will
Your Excellent Ears Your Loving Heart
Your Marvelous Mouth Thanksgiving Every Day
Your Eager Eyes

At the beginning of each lesson is a selection of Bible stories written in the language of early childhood. Thank You for Life, (String 1, part 11), can be taught using stories such as The Garden of Eden, The Parable of the Sower, and The Parable of the Rich Fool. Even the powerful story of the crucifixion and resurrection can be used to teach about everlasting life if we use words young children can understand.

Jesus died, but God brought him back to life. He wants us to know that our spirits will never die." Luke 23, 24.

The materials needed to teach Bright Beginnings lessons are easy to find everyday objects.

"Show a real leaf or a flower. Say, ‘This is a real leaf. It is alive.’ Encourage the children to feel it and use a finger or two to trace around its edge. Say, ‘Only God can make a real leaf. Thank you, God, for life.’"

Simple activities, games, songs and poems -both new and traditional- continue the theme. To teach thanksgiving for the animals, try singing the words God, who loves us, made the earth to the tune of Old MacDonald had a Farm. To encourage caring, try this activity:

"Pretend to hurt your finger and say, ‘Ouch!’. Put an adhesive bandage on the ‘hurt’. Smile at the children and say, ‘Now, that’s better. I put the bandage on and God will make it well.’ Ask them if they will help you feel better by patting the ‘hurt’ hand or giving you a hug." After this activity, tell the early childhood version of "The Good Samaritan".

Jesus told this story. A hurt man was by the road. One man came down the road. The hurt man said, "Help me." The man said, "No." A second man came down the road. The hurt man said, "Help me." The second man said, "No." A third man came down the road. The hurt man said, "Help me." The third man said, "I’m sorry you are hurt. I will help." And he did! God wants us to help others. Luke 10:30-37

In the back of each Learning String is a collection of 75 Bible stories told in the language of early childhood. Each of them is as easy to tell and understand as the story of "The Three Little Pigs" and so much more important.

The Parent Guidebook Page at the end of each lesson can be photocopied for the parents or can serve as an extension of the lessons for parents who are using Bright Beginnings at home. The Guidebook Page restates the adult’s spiritual goal as a guide for young children, provides activities that lead toward the goal, and suggests everyday objects that can be used to reinforce the lesson.

Bright Beginnings is a complete curriculum that can serve alone or as a compliment to your current early childhood program. It is an excellent guide for new teachers and volunteers and a handy resource for experienced educators. It can be used to teach parenting classes and to support parents as they strive to provide a Christian home for their young children.

If you are interested in ordering Bright Beginnings sets (the Teacher/Parent Manual and each of the two Learning Strings) or multiples of the Teacher/Parent Manual for the families of your students, for workshops, or for other teachers, there is a 20% discount on ten or more books.

Children begin learning on the day they are born. If from that day, they are guided by Christ-like adults, spiritual qualities will become more than the lessons we teach. They will become a way of life. Thank you for considering Bright Beginnings as your assistant in accomplishing this important task.
